The city has been totally destroyed and rebuilt anew a greta many times throughout the centuries. Each time Moscow was resurrected from ruins, it grew detailed and further beautiful. For every rebuilding, the most talented and renowned architects were invited from around the world to restore Moscow. Hence, Moscow sights are truly worth a visit. Today Moscow is the city where the old and the new, the great and the small exist side by side in mutual tolerance and respect. Near ancient convents and cathedrals, there tower above ultramodern shopping centres and skyscrapers. But, originally, Moscow is the epicentre of the Russian history.
Red Square - the symbol of the metropolis - is the most famous city square in Moscow and, arguably, one of the best-known in the world. It separates the Kremlin, which used to be the royal citadel and is nowadays the official residence of the President of Russia, from a historic merchant quarter called Kitai-gorod. As the principal Moscow streets radiate from here in every direction, Red Square is typically regarded as the central square of Moscow and of all Russia.
Resurrection Gate is known as the only existing gate of the Kitai-gorod in Moscow. It connects the north-western end of Red Square with Manege Square and gives its name to Voskresenskaya Square (known as Resurrection Square) placed nearby.
Moscow parks are also popular with foreign visitors. Alexander Garden was one of Moscow's first public parks. There are 3 separate gardens located along the western Kremlin wall.
The State Historical Museum of Russia is set between Red Square and Manege Square. Its exhibitions vary from relics of the prehistoric peoples inhabiting present-day Russia to extremely valuable artworks obtained by the Romanovs. The number of works of art in the collection displayed in the museum amounts to millions.
Moscow is said to exhaust you before you exhaust its possibilities. |
